Mark is a Seismic Risk Specialist with Holmes Structures in California. He is a licensed Structural Engineer and has over thirty years of experience in building evaluations, seismic risk assessments, and multi-hazard risk assessments.

Mark grew up in New Zealand and received his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Engineering from the University of Canterbury in the 1980s. He moved to California following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and from there has been providing seismic risk assessments and related services for owners and insurers of buildings, facilities and infrastructure around the world. His areas of expertise include “pre-event” seismic loss analysis (using both engineering-based models and “CAT” models used by the insurance industry) and benefit-cost analysis for mitigation measures. Mark has also worked on “post-event” damage/repair assessments and insurance claims for earthquakes in California, Chile and New Zealand.

Mark has a career-long interest in improving the ways the engineering industry’s understanding of buildings can be incorporated into the insurance process.
